5 Signs You Need a Hearing Test (and What Happens Next)

Hearing loss rarely shows up all at once. It sneaks in a little at a time, so slowly that the person living with it is often the last one to notice. That's why we hear the same thing in our Henderson office, from families all over Green Valley and the Las Vegas valley, almost every week: "My daughter made me come in."

If you're an adult child who's started to wonder about a parent's hearing, you're not being nosy. You're paying attention. And if you're the one wondering about your own ears, good for you for asking the question. Here are five signs that it's time to get a real hearing test.

5 Signs You Need a Hearing Test

1. The TV keeps getting louder

This is the classic one. If you walk into Dad's living room and the volume is set where the neighbors could follow along, or if family members keep reaching for the remote to turn it down, that's worth noticing. Captions turned on "just because" can be another clue.

2. "Everybody mumbles these days"

People with hearing loss often feel like the problem is everyone else. Mom might say her grandkids talk too fast or that restaurant servers don't speak clearly. You might notice her answering a question nobody asked, or nodding along when you can tell she didn't catch what was said.

3. Pulling back from things they used to enjoy

This one is easy to miss, because it doesn't look like a hearing problem. It looks like someone who just doesn't want to go out. When conversations get hard to follow, busy restaurants, church, card night, and family dinners can start to feel more stressful than fun. Some people quietly stop going.

4. Trouble on the phone, or missing the doorbell

Phone calls take away the lip-reading and facial cues we all lean on without realizing it. If your parent avoids calls, keeps asking you to repeat yourself, or hands the phone to someone else, pay attention. The same goes for missing the doorbell, the microwave beep, or the turn signal clicking in the car.

5. Feeling worn out after conversations, or ringing in the ears

Straining to hear is real work for the brain. Many people with untreated hearing loss tell us they feel tired after a family gathering, even a happy one. Ringing, buzzing, or humming in the ears (called tinnitus) is also worth getting checked, since it can come along with hearing loss.

When Not to Wait: Sudden Hearing Loss

If you or a loved one ever notices a sudden drop in hearing, especially in one ear, don't wait for an appointment that's weeks out. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) says sudden hearing loss should be treated as a medical emergency, so see a doctor right away. Getting treatment quickly gives you the best chance of recovering hearing.

Worried About Mom or Dad?

Bringing this up with a parent can feel awkward. Pick a calm, private moment, talk about what you've noticed, and keep the ask small: just a baseline test. For a full guide, read how to help a loved one in denial about hearing loss.

What to Expect at a Hearing Test in Henderson

A hearing test at Ryan's Hearing Center isn't a sales pitch. We start with a conversation about your history and take a look in your ears. Then we test your hearing in our sound-treated room. That includes speech and word-recognition testing, not just beeps, so we can see how well you understand real conversation.

Afterward, we walk through the results in plain English. Sometimes the answer is "your hearing looks great, come back in a year or two." Sometimes it's earwax. And sometimes it's a conversation about next steps, which might include whether over-the-counter hearing aids could be enough for you. There's never any pressure to decide anything that day.

A hearing test is $45, or $0 with a doctor's referral.
